  • Is it easy for a person with high degree of myopia to get retinal detachment?

I have a high degree of myopia and my eye doctor told me that I can not jump or run dramatically, or my retinal will be detached easily? It that true ? why?

I know that certain people are more prone to have retinal detachment than others. If you have a high degree of myopia, you have a higher chance of having a retinal detachment. This is because myopia is the result of a longer eyeball. The retina can be thought of as a piece of saran wrap. In a normal eye the saran-wrap layer has no holes or thin areas. If you stretch the saran wrap slowly in all directions, some areas thin and develop holes or tears. The same thing in a larger eye , the retina thins in certain places and is more prone to detaching.

If you have high myopia then there is a higher chance of you developing a retinal detachment. Retinal detachment is extremely common in those with severe or extreme myopia (above 5-6 diopters), as their eyes are longer and the retina is stretched thin. The lifetime risk increases to 1 in 20. Myopia is associated with 67% of retinal detachment cases. Myopic patients are often younger than non-myopic ones.

The incidence of retinal detachment is higher in myopic eyes than in emmetropic eyes (3.2% [myopia greater than -6.00 D] vs 0.71%, respectively).1,2 The yearly incidence of retinal detachment is approximately 0.015% in eyes with up to -4.75 D of myopia, 0.07% in eyes with -5.00 to -9.75 D, and 0.075% in eyes with myopia greater than -10.00 D.3,4 The risk of retinal detachment in myopic eyes is anywhere from 15 to 110 times greater in patients with -15.00 D to -20.00 D of myopia. Premature posterior vitreous detachment in patients aged 40 to 60 years with peripheral retinal degenerations and moderate-to-high myopia may be a predisposing factor to more frequent development of retinal disease.
