  • Can an optometrist diagnose optic neuritis?

I guess i get optic neuritis. Can i take an eye exam by an optometrist? Will s/he diagnose it?

Yes, the optometrist will check your optic neuritis through taking an eye exam. If your field of view becomes smaller, you may have diagnosed with the optic neuritis. In addition, if you have the change in pupils, the optometrist will know that you are with optic neuritis. The clinical disease according to different parts of the optic nerve inflammation is divided into the ball inside the ball and outside the ball. The former one refers to optic disk inflammation, while the latter refers to the ball after optic neuritis. All these could be observed. You need to protect the eyes carefully through the good diet and good lifestyle. You could go to have eyes exams often which could help you fix the eyes problems as soon as possible.

Well, generally speaking, optic neuritis is known as retro-bulbar neuritis and it is a leading cause of vision loss. In common, it can be caused by a variety of processes leading to inflammation and damage to the optic nerve. So in my opinion, you may need to go and see the ophthalmologists who will be specialists, though both optometrists and ophthalmologists can be eye doctors. And actually optic neuritis is related to damage to the optic nerve as a result of increased pressure within the eye. By the way, smoking can just increase the risk of getting optic neuritis. And also, injury to the optic nerve caused by trauma can be the cause too. So just be careful about it.
