  • Can too much oxygen cause blindness?

Is it possible to cause blindness to baby because of too much oxygen at birth? Why or why not?

  • #2
Yes, it is very possible for the new baby to get blindness because of too much oxygen at birth. The eyes nerves are too weak which should not get so much pressure. If the oxygen is too much, it will cause the great pressure at the eyes. At the same time, the throat problems could also affect the eyes surface soon. Thus you should take great notice of this aspect.

Yes, there is a kind of oxygen overdose named ophthalmo-retinae type of oxygen intoxication which makes the premature baby blind. A premature baby is often put in an incubator where there is high partial pressure oxygen inside it. If the baby inhale too much high partial pressure oxygen, blood vessels in its sensitive retina will be blocked and retrolental fibroplasia occurs in its eyes. As a result, the baby will get blind.

Well, yes, according to some researches, it is kind of possible for the new baby to be blind because of too much oxygen at birth. First, you should know that for the newborn baby, their eyes nerves are too weak. So that is dangerous for their eyes to suffer too much pressure. And at this time, if you get too much oxygen into eyes, definitely, it can just lead to high eye pressure. In that way, it will just affect their eyes, finally, leading to blindness. Also, we can say that because of that, blood vessels in its sensitive retina will be blocked and retrolental fibroplasia occurs in its eyes. And that can be the cause too.
