It is suggested that children and adults ages 6 through 60 have an eye exam every two year and for the people over age 61 who are recommended an eye exam every year to maintain eye wellness. So we always want to know ho much does an eye exam cost. The national average charge for an eye exam is $114 for those without insurance. The cost varies depending upon the clinic and region of the country. Lakewood Family Eye Care clinic, in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., charges $109 for an eye exam for those without insurance. Discount clinics, such as those at WalMart, can charge as little as $50 for an eye exam. For the people who have vision insurance coverage, the typical copay will apply. For some, the vision plan covers the full cost of a regular annual eye exam. Other plans charge a copay of $5 to $35. Some clinics have a separate charge for retraction, a test that determines the patient's prescription. This varies by clinic, ranging from $15 to $40 at the Main Line Eye Specialists. In many cases, this charge will not be covered by insurance.

Nationally, the average cost of an eye exam without insurance is $114, as of 2010, according to www.cheapeyeglasses.net. Cost variances are due to the particular clinic and region of the country in which it is located. An average family eye care center may charge roughly $109 for an eye exam, and retailers like Wal-Mart may charge as little as $50 in their discount clinics. You may have to pay a separate charge for refraction,a test to determine a patient's eyeglass prescription--in some clinics, which ranges from $15 to $40.

An eye exam should be done by a registered optometrist. Eye exams help to diagnose and correct vision problems and eye disease. The cost of a basic eye exam is around $40-$150. Eye exams at optical centers at retail stores like Walmart or Costco are usually cheaper than eye exams at an optometrist office. Basic eye exam cost at an optical center at a retail stores is around $50-$60, while the cost at an optometrist office is around $100-$150. The cost of an eye exam is increased if additional tests need to be done. The cost of an eye dilation test is around $20 and the cost of an Optos retinal exam is around $30. Patients that want contact lenses will also have to pay for a contact lens fitting; contact lens fitting costs $40-$150. In addition, there may be an extra $50-$100 charge for new patients. Most insurance plans cover at least some of the cost of an eye exam. In the United States, the cost of eye exams is similar throughout the entire country.
