  • What can the doctor find in an eye exam other than Visual Problems?

My doctor told me I have diabetes in an eye exam and I wonder how could he find that. What other things can the doctor find in an eye exam other than Visual Problems?

The doctor can check eye disease such as cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. An eye exam can also check other body problems because eyes are the window to total body health. During an eye exam, doctors will look at the blood vessels in the back of the eye. High blood sugar will result in the growth of additional blood vessels in the retina which is also called diabetic retinopathy. So your doctor can find that when you have diabetes.

Dilated eye exams can help doctors to detect tiny blockages in the capillaries feeding blood to the eyes. Often, this is an early indicators that a person has excessive plaque in their veins and should be watched closely for signs of a stroke.

Other than visual problems, the doctor can detect some other diseases by looking into your eye. The doctor will give you a dilated eye exam so that he can view changes in your eye which is caused by some diseases, such as cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.
