Are UV coatings on prescription lenses are as effective as sunglasses?

My husband often works outdoors and he has a UV coating on his prescription lenses.He thinks it is enough to protect his eyes from the sun.But I think he still need sunglasses.Are UV coatings on prescription lenses are as effective as sunglasses?
